Rare Large 50,000 YR Pleistocene Peccary 14" Platygonus Compressus Skull - Only Complete one from Florida
Species: Extinct Platygonus compresses
Species description: Extinct Genus-species of herbivorous peccary. They belong to Artidactyla order and were
endemic to North America. It was gregarious animal and traveled in packs. It was larger than modern peccaries and other platygonus species around 5 ft with long legs , stout body with pig-like snout and long carnivore like tusks
probably use to fend off predators. It is called a Flat-headed peccary. It diet was found to be very varied as a hard
browsing animal and did not eat grasses as shown by much work on teeth analysis .It was a total land peccary
and large. There were six species, and this species has rarest full skulls anywhere. Many pieces have been found
of the animal but complete skeletons are extremely rare with only a few in museums. They lived in caves and
have been found in fragments within caves.

Platygonus Compresses Peccary Skull From Florida. This animal while found in many pieces in areas like Indiana, Kentucky, WI, Texas, Tenn. and Virginia. Only a few whole skulls have ever been found and this is only one for
sale ever found in Florida . IT is at least 30,000 years old as found in a clay field fissure that kept it in great
shape for up to 100,000 years. Other items in this area date back to this timeframe. This animal is over 95 %
original with all teeth as a few premolars are not present, however, this is a young adult and some of teeth
were lost and adult teeth starting to come through and these probably were lost with others just beginning
to take form. The colors of skull and teeth are light to dark but all are original except one due to strata it was
found and lowers and uppers are same animal. One side of jaw and back are very dark. It was glued back
as broken on bottom jaw but has no restore on bottom jaw so 100% except for a few incisors. The sharp
canines are all 1 ¾" long and in super shape with 3 of 4 from this animal. The person who found this has been
hunting for many years and is one of foremost authorities in Florida on Pleistocene Fauna so this was such as
find. This skull is impeccable, and if you want something no one else has this is it. It is a great mammal
find and comes with a informational book by the first person to find it in 1848. This is so great if it stays in
my collection forever I actually will be very happy. The skull itself has negligible restore just crack fills.
WHAT A TREAT. If you can find another for sale entirely complete, anyway, I will drop price by $400. I know
that won’t happen so expect to pay what it is worth. This piece separates the true collectors from the pretenders, and I doubt you will ever find anyone who has one in their collection. Discounts don’t apply to only one
